Wallet Platforms
Walletap supports Apple Wallet, Google Wallet, and Huawei Wallet
This guide covers the setup process for all three major platforms and explains the differences between the two types of passes available on wallet platforms - barcode passes and contactless NFC passes.
Barcode Passes
Barcode passes use standard barcode formats including QR codes, PDF417, and Code 128. These passes can be scanned and redeemed using any standard barcode reader available on the market, making them compatible with existing point-of-sale systems, handheld scanners, and smartphone camera apps. This makes barcode passes the most accessible option for businesses with existing scanning infrastructure.
Contactless NFC Passes
Contactless NFC passes provide a tap-to-redeem experience but require specialized NFC terminals designed specifically for wallet pass redemption. Standard off-the-market NFC terminals are not compatible, and importantly, readers that support Apple Pay or Google Pay don't automatically support wallet passes- these are entirely different technologies with different protocols.
NFC wallet pass readers must also be properly configured for pass redemption before use. Walletap provides simple configurators to help set up these specialized terminals. Our Windows desktop application supports many NFC readers by default, with some requiring no additional configuration at all.
We partner with reader providers like DotOrigin to offer specialized NFC terminals that are certified for wallet pass redemption, ensuring reliable contactless experiences for your customers.
Apple Wallet
Walletap connects your business to Apple Wallet and handles the technical complexity while giving you full control over your pass distribution.
Barcode Passes
Barcode passes work immediately through Walletap with no additional configuration needed. However, passes will show "Walletap" as the issuer on the back of the pass.
To use your own branding as the pass issuer, you'll need to complete the Apple Developer setup process below (you can skip the NFC certificate request if you only need barcode passes).
NFC Passes
For NFC-enabled passes, you need:
Apple Developer Program enrollment ($99/year)
NFC entitlement - Special approval from Apple
